There’s More To The Christian Life Than Singing & Sermons

The Christian life is just about singing and sitting while listening to a preacher for an hour and a half, isn’t it? That’s how Jesus did it, right? He preached, they listened, and then everyone went home.

That’s not how it works.

This is what James said in James 2:18, “I will show you my faith by my deeds.” Earlier in James 1:22 he warns, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

The Christian life is a life of service. How do I know? Because our Lord serves. Jesus reminds us that the student isn’t above the teacher, nor a servant above his master (Matt 10:24). In Mark 10:45, Jesus says, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.

That means we have no excuse.

Equipped To Serve

“But I don’t have any talent or ability.”

Actually, you do. Every Christian has at least one spiritual gift.

We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
Romans 12:6-8

There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.
1 Corinthians 12:5

My primary gift is serving, sometimes called ‘helps’. I can tell because when I was volunteering at church before I was saved, I was resentful at those who made my task harder. The job was to clean between services, and it annoyed me at how dirty people are. I was doing this one thing under my own power.

Afterwards, it was easier, a joy, and one ministry wasn’t enough. I was Spirit-Empowered, exercising the gift in more and more areas. Special events, feeding the homeless, different jobs in the Deaf Church, GriefShare, and Sparkle and Shine, the cleaning team I started with. My weekends are full, and I’m rarely tired.

Only God can transform someone as self-centered and antisocial as me into this. I’m not bragging on me, but Him. Romans 15:17, “Therefore I glory in Christ Jesus in my service to God.

It goes beyond church too. It is every day of the week. As a church, 2 Corinthians 9:12 is at work, “This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.

As one person, Ephesians 6:7-8 is experienced, “Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.

What acts of service can you do for others in Jesus’ name? Remember, a small act of kindness is a victory for good in an evil world.
