Compassion and Joy Personified

Do you know someone that everyone seems to love? Think for a moment. Got a name in mind? For me, it can be only one person.

My wife, Casey.

I’ve never seen anyone that makes a meteor-sized impact that leaves ever-widening ripples in people’s lives. Yet she does, consistently.  She’s who I admire most.

Two Stories

I was at the store by myself, unsupervised because she was helping a friend. The lady who checked me out asked, “Where’s your lovely wife?”

After telling her, and walking back to my truck, I heard my name called. A friend who’d went through GriefShare with her, and later me. Same question.

It’s like being married to a celebrity.

I had to take her to urgent care one day. While there she saw a receptionist she knew from her work. Then in the examination room, her personality had the nurse, whom she had never met, laughing and filled with joy.

“I love her,” she told me. I interpreted it for my wife. See, she’s Deaf, yet communicates tremendously without a word.

How Does She Do It?

She genuinely cares for others. She loves others in a culture where people are focused on themselves. Someone actually reaching out to you is rare enough it’s noticed and appreciated.

It makes an impact.

I’ve watched her hug people I don’t know as they leave the front of the altar after receiving prayer. Her life has been full of tragedy, yet that doesn’t hold her down. Have I mentioned that I look up to her?

She’s a good example of compassion. She lives out what Paul told the Ephesian church.

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ, God forgave you.
Ephesians 4:32

She clothes herself in compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience (Colossians 3:12). For which I, as one who probably pushed the boundaries of her patience, am grateful.

If I have a heart just a quarter the size of her’s, I’ll be satisfied.
