Wedding Blunder; Learning Under Jesus

Note: This series is written as a first-person narrative in order to present Jesus in the context he walked with the unknown disciple that narrates presenting my thoughts and sparking more thoughts with his questions. Enjoy.

Jesus Changes Water Into Wine

Weddings are a week-long celebration, and luckily for us, Jesus’ mother was invited. It was huge with the entire community celebrating, because, who doesn’t like free food? We were there with Jesus when a major social blunder was discovered (John 2:1-12).

No more wine, and the party wasn’t even half over. The family would never live it down. Mary came to Jesus, telling him what had happened, before going to the servants to tell them to do whatever Jesus told them (John 2:4-5).

Moms…

Jesus looks at the six 20-30 gallon water pots that are used for ceremonial washing. He told the servants to fill them with water. Curious, I wondered what he was up to.

I watch as he tells the servant to draw out water and take it to the manager of the feast. Jesus rejoins

us as we watch the manager’s surprised expression when he tastes the wine. He calls for the groom, telling him, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

Jesus had just turned water into wine. Why? To save a party? To put his stamp of approval on marriage? He can be enigmatic. Rabbis usually are.

Only us, the servants, and his mom knew about it at first. I began to trust him more, because no ordinary person can do such a thing.

We stayed with his mom for awhile, then we were off to Passover, where he had a visitor one night. A leader of a top religious group, the Pharisees. A man named Nicodemus.
