With the Conventions out of the way, and campaigns in full swing, I decided to go over the party platforms and as is my way, dissect them.
Because how many people actually know their Party’s platform, or the others, in case they have better ideas. Not that many. Don’t worry I’m here to reveal them. Starting with the 7 page Libertarian Party Platform.
Here’s the first 3 paragraphs of the Preamble:
As Libertarians, we seek a world of liberty; a world in which all individuals are sovereign over their own lives and no one is forced to sacrifice his or her values for the benefit of others.
We believe that respect for individual rights is the essential precondition for a free and prosperous world, that force and fraud must be banished from human relationships, and that only through freedom can peace and prosperity be realized.
Consequently, we defend each person’s right to engage in any activity that is peaceful and honest, and welcome the diversity that freedom brings. The world we seek to build is one where individuals are free to follow their own dreams in their own ways, without interference from government or any authoritarian power.
This sounds familiar…
Let’s look at the Planks of the Platform. It starts off with Personal Liberty, the freedom to make whatever choices you want, as long as it doesn’t initiate force of another person, group or government. And bear the consequences of your actions. I can find no fault in this at all.
Ultimate free speech, with the only limitation being the violation of another’s rights. Like passing a law banning certain words on tv. Religion, same thing, and government cannot help nor stop you unless you’re violating the rights of another.
Speaking of that, victimless crimes like drug use. Against.
Personal relationships, this covers gay rights, which the Democrats brag about putting in their platform first, is a lie. The LP did, they just encompass everyone. Their plank is that government cannot discriminate against your sexual orientation, preference, gender or gender identity in marriage, child custody, adoption, immigration or military service laws.
Now we’re to the Abortion issue. Government stays out of it, no Planned Parenthood funding, nothing. This issue is one I have conflict with, as well the readers of Growls Of A Wolf know.
Crime and Justice. The government is to protect your rights of life, liberty and property. And anyone who uses force or fraud against you will be breaking the law. You, however, can do whatever you want to yourself because no ones going to catch you when your actions catch up to you.
If wronged, then seek restitution through the civil court process. They also support Jury Nullification, whereas the law is unjust, then they can find someone not guilty.
And finally for this post, Self-Defense.
“The only legitimate use of force is in defense of individual rights — life, liberty, and justly acquired property — against aggression.”
And no restrictions on firearms and ammunition. So yeah, even more hardcore than I am on this. The Libertarian Platform so is built on the Foundation of the Non-Aggression Principle for Individuals and Governments.
Tomorrow we’ll tackle Economic Liberty and what it means to the Libertarians.
