The Declaration of Independence: Diplomatic Final Statements

Have you read the Declaration of Independence? You really should, so you’ll

see where we came from and the fact that we’re going back to the tyranny we fought a war over. This is 9 of a 10 part series on the Declaration. Let’s begin.

After listing the charges i.e reasons for seceding from Britain the Founders told Britain and us that it was of last resort. They have tried diplomacy, and the King wouldn’t stop so they walked away.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

In the last paragraph they laid out that they didn’t even need the  British and have told them to back off with the laws and regulations. Kind of like a few of the States asserting the 10th Amendment at the encroachment of Washington D.C. Same parallel. So they drew a line in the sand, paraphrased, ‘Come at us with ill-intent and we’ll take you down, leave us alone and we’re cool’.

We defied one tyrant, fought for freedom, and birthed a nation based on the foundational right to live your own life as long as you do no harm to others. We have been moving steadily backwards from the ideals that founded America, and we should be ashamed. The power is in the people, and we abdicated that authority to faceless bureaucrats. We have a choice, Dependent or Independent. Which are you?

Next week, I’ll look at the final paragraphs and see if we suffer under the same today.
