Time to pull the pin on another mental grenade and let the intellectual shrapnel fly.
A summary of the DADT policy is this; outright ban of openly gay enlistees, if closeted and get in, and the brass is forbidden from asking, but it leaked out or from admisssion, then you’re kicked out. I am tackling this piece-meal, starting with:
Don’t Ask- I don’t see why this matters about a persons sexual preferences, as long as they can do the job, hit what they shoot at, and don’t run. The rest is irrelevant.
Don’t Tell- This is a personal decision, but realize that some people are intolerant assholes, but if you are willing to face that fire, I have your back.
I hope we have progressed far enough where it is becoming a non-issue. I have lesbian friends and an ex-girlfriend who is bi-sexual. And they have an admirable love of life. It doesn’t matter who they love, that’s just a part of an overall whole. They’re choices will only offend some people’s sensibilities, get over it, the world will keep spinning. Here is the this messed up policy in action from my point of view.
You have a highly-trained service member who does his job professionally, every day. Wait a minute!!! It was just learned and proven that he is GAY!!! Let’s kick him out! It doesn’t matter if he is good at his job. He is gay, that makes all his training irrelevant, he can never do his job right again!
To that I say bullshit. He is still a pro and should keep his job and benefits, otherwise it’s discrimination and spitting in Martin Luther King Jr’s eye. The judging people on the content of character he spoke about applies to more than the race issue. In the end, a gay soldier is still in the trenches, watching your back, and giving their lives for you.
Repeal it!
They’re is harassment now and will be after, and I realize you can’t legislate tolerance or acceptance, but you can educate those open-minded enough. Gay Rights are just as important as the Civil Rights movement. In fact I would say it is a civil right unto itself.
